ARC OUT LOUD: POLYESTER - SCRATCH 'N' SNIFF
In John Waters’ Divine tribute to the Hollywood ‘woman’s picture’, a frustrated housewife, Francine Fishpaw (Divine), tries to maintain her sanity while taking care of her dysfunctional household.
Elmer (David Samson), her husband and the owner of an adult theatre, is sleeping with his secretary. Francine’s delinquent son Dexter (Ken King) and pregnant teen daughter Lulu (Mary Garlington) aren't helping matters any. But then Francine meets the dashing Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), owner of a theatre specializing in art films. With her life spiralling out of control, can Francine overcome tragedy, reunite her family and find true love?
Francine has a keen sense of smell and odours play an important role in Polyester. For its original release, John Waters designed Odorama – a new version of ‘scratch 'n’ sniff'.For this screening, we’ve created our own special scratch ‘n’ sniff cards which we’ll distribute to the audience. Each card has spots numbered 1 through 10. When the corresponding number flashes on the screen, scratch the appropriate spot and join in the olfactory fun of this uniquely scent-sational experience!
‘A rancidly hilarious slice of Americana’ – Newsweek (1981)‘Polyester isn’t quite up to the low standards of Pink Flamingos, but it’s still a worthy effort by Waters' – Los Angeles Times
