Adding colour brings Australia’s filmed past to life. This episode from the new second series of Australia in Colour covers sport and entertainment in the years following Federation.

It features sporting heroes like Phar Lap and the Australian cricket team, and the introduction of surf lifesavers at Bondi Beach.

In the arts, the episode features Dame Nellie Melba while hit films like The Sentimental Bloke (1919) and Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940) reflect the changing lifestyles and preoccupations of Australia.

Narrated by Hugo Weaving, Australia in Colour gives us a chance to relive history from a fresh perspective. The second series follows the initial four-part series that screened on SBS in early 2019 to great acclaim. Over 160 minutes of NFSA footage – from 474 different
titles – finds its way into the new episodes.

Join us after the screening for a Q&A session with producer Jo-anne McGowan and NFSA Senior Digital Colourist Craig Dingwall.

‘[Australia in Colour is] a rare example of a TV show befitting of that overused accolade, “landmark”’ - The Guardian
