In 1972, Aretha Franklin recorded her gospel album Amazing Grace live in Los Angeles, supported by the Southern California Community Choir. As Aretha sang from the lectern and the piano, director Sydney Pollack captured legendary footage of this part-recording, part-concert experience that filled the pews of New Bethel Baptist Church over two nights.
Plagued by technical and legal issues, Amazing Grace was finally released in 2018, decades after it was recorded, with filmmaker Alan Elliott successfully synchronising the audio and raw footage to fully realise this critically acclaimed and powerful music documentary.
‘A movie worth seeing and re-seeing and re-seeing again… the Queen of Soul at the height of her powers, live, in full colour, in rich sound’ –TheWrap
