Both a tribute film and a detective story narrated by Jodie Foster, Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché traces the circumstances which led to the prolific and pioneering filmmaker being overlooked in cinema history.

Guy- Blaché was active in France from the late 19th Century. She was the first woman to direct a film and not only founded a successful film company, but directed, produced or supervised around 1,000 films – many of them sadly lost to cinema history.

The documentary will be preceded by a 16mm short film from the NFSA collection, directed by Guy-Blaché: Matrimony’s Speed Limit (1913).

‘A detective story wrapped up as a biopic… had me in tears by the time it ended.

A stirring document of an amazing filmmaker!’ – Deadline Hollywood

‘A timely contribution to the conversation about the challenges facing women
filmmakers… someone who really should be better known by now’ – The Hollywood Reporter
