In Broome, Western Australia in 1969, teenager Willie Johnson (Rocky McKenzie) struggles to woo Rosie (Jessica Mauboy) – and then his mother packs him off to boarding school in Perth to continue his education and become a Catholic priest. After getting into mischief and running away from school, Willie finds himself on a wild road trip back to Broome with two hippies (Missy Higgins, Tom Budge) and ‘Uncle’ Tadpole (Ernie Dingo).
Accompanied by the joyous sounds of country gospel, with plenty of Broome-style Broadway dancing, this coming-of-age story based on the 1990 stage musical celebrates the adventure of finding your way back home.
‘If you dare to like happy films, this Bran Nue Dae is just for you’ – The Sydney Morning Herald
Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
