High-school flunk-outs Bill S. Preston, esquire (Alex Winter) and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan (Keanu Reeves) are visited by time traveller Rufus (George Carlin), who reveals that the music of their metal band the Wyld Stallyns will eventually bring about a utopian society. As Ted’s father threatens to send him to a faraway military school – spelling the end of the band – Bill and Ted embark on a journey into the past, gathering enough famous figures to help them pass history and keep the future from being destroyed.
With a time-travelling phone box that can’t possibly be confused with any other pop culture artefact, this ‘80s sci-fi comedy spawned film sequels, television tie-ins, video games, a long-running theme park show – even the short-lived and nutritionally questionable Bill & Ted’s Excellent Cereal.
‘An insanely effective no-brainer of a film, sparkling with a simple charm and energy’ – Empire
