‘Body / Building’ is a movement workshop that considers the potential of the body as a moving sculpture and the frame of the body in relation to the frame of a building. Participants will work individually and in groups, responding to prompts to loosen their bodies and engage with the space.
The prompts are inspired by a Japanese movement practice known as ‘Butoh’ or ‘Bodyweather’, which works on the basis of moving outside the ‘habitual body’. Exercises are also drawn from experimental performance art scores such as Hans Ulrich Obrist’s ‘do it’, the Fluxus Performance Workbook, and Franz Erhard Walther’s relational artworks.
This movement workshop is open to all – no performance experience or existing movement practice is required. Please wear comfortable clothing.
Presented by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) in collaboration with Canberra Art Biennial and Canberra Glassworks, alongside the exhibition of Of line, of light by artist Bronte Cormican-Jones on the NFSA lawns.
