Emerging in the 1980s, cyberpunk is a genre of dystopian science fiction blending gritty urban decay with a high-tech future. The word ‘cyberpunk’ was coined by Bruce Bethke in his short story of the same name about a teen hacker, published in Amazing Stories in 1983. It was quickly adopted to describe the growing body of work that was already exploring advanced technology, ruthless corporate capitalism, social inequality, the manipulation of reality and the loss of personal autonomy.

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), based on Philip K. Dick’s story ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ was an early US cyberpunk film that questioned what it means to be human. In the same year, Katsuhiro Otomo debuted his Akira manga series in Japan and would go on to direct the 1988 anime film adaptation, sounding a warning about the dangers of unrestrained technology and power.

RoboCop, released in 1987, is set in a near-future Detroit and follows a police officer who is turned into a cyborg by a megacorporation. Exploring themes of corporate greed and corruption, it led to two sequels and a remake released in 2014.

The Matrix, released in 1999, explores the nature of reality, free will and determinism. Two sequels followed it in 2003, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, followed by The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. A fifth film in the franchise is currently in development.
