This intimate two-hander pairs a couple who, at first glance, appear to be opposites in every way.

Ali (Ali Al Jenabi) is not a citizen; he drives a taxi on another man’s licence and relies on his GPS to negotiate a city he doesn’t know. Esther (Imelda Bourke) is an elderly woman who gets into his cab and forgets where she is going. While she can’t remember, he can’t forget the tragedies of his native land that have brought him here.

Over a long night’s journey through memory and survival, they will realise that they are more alike than they thought. Both are alone in the cold, bright city – and their fates are inevitably interconnected.

Produced and shot in Adelaide, this intimate film by Madeleine Blackwell delves into the isolation and loneliness of life in modern Australia. It stars Ali Al Jenabi, an asylum seeker from Iraq and the subject of the award-winning book The People Smuggler, and singer Imelda Bourke, making her film debut at age 92.

‘Imelda Bourke ... is fantastic. It's a glorious film’ – ABC Radio National Adelaide
