In the year 1900, charismatic Miranda (Anne Lambert) attends an all-girl boarding school under the watchful eye of strict headmistress Mrs Appleyard (Rachel Roberts).
On a hot St Valentine's Day, the girls are treated to a picnic field trip to a nearby unusual but scenic volcanic formation called Hanging Rock. Miranda and several other girls are drawn to explore the rock. It's not until the end of the day that the teachers realise that three girls and one member of staff have mysteriously disappeared...
Based on the acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is visually mesmerising, unsettling and enigmatic. An iconic film of the 1970s Australian New Wave and an early triumph for Peter Weir, the film continues to haunt audiences to this day.
‘As a tantalising puzzle, a tease, a suggestion of a forbidden answer just out of earshot, it works hypnotically and very nicely indeed’ – Chicago Sun-Times
Presented on a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
