1984  | 35mm | USA | D: David Lynch

‘From the boundaries of incredible to the borders of the impossible!’

In anticipation of the release of Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune, we revisit this cult 80s mind trip!

David Lynch’s infamous adaptation of Frank Herbet’s sci-fi masterwork Dune has been called many things: brain-bending, ambitious, a beautiful disaster. Now you can experience all its majesty on the big screen and decide for yourself!

In the year 10191, the spice melange, found only on the desert planet of Arrakis, is the most valuable substance in the universe. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides (Jürgen Prochnow), ousting his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens

When the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Leto’s son Paul (Kyle MacLachlan) to lead the native Fremen of Arrakis in a battle for control of the planet and its spice.

A film you might never expect David Lynch to make, is ultimately a film only he could produce. Join us for a big screen experience, for the chance to loudly voice your opinion and enjoy all the costumes, all the absurdity, and all the Sting!

Screening from a 35mm print from the NFSA collection.

‘It is a dark, spellbinding dream … It's not always easy to follow, but it's even harder to get out of your system. For better and for worse, it takes more artistic chances than any major American movie around’ – Newsweek (1984)

‘I don't believe in guilty pleasures or so bad they're good movies, but Dune challenged that philosophy more than any movie I can think of. So bizarre, twisted and perplexing ... that I appreciated its conviction and ambition’  Filmspotting
