The Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) plots revenge on her ex-lover by making a daring deal with another ex-lover, the Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich). What follows is a dangerous game of seduction, love and jealousy, with Cécile de Volanges (Uma Thurman) and Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfieffer) caught in the web of their sordid schemes.
This period tale is based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuse and adapted from Christopher Hampton’s 1985 stage play of the same name. Dangerous Liaisons received seven Academy Award nominations, taking home wins in three categories.
‘A delectably naughty experience. This sort of wit and immediacy is extraordinarily rare in a period film.’ – Washington Post
Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
