Luchino Visconti’s tale of desire and aging follows famed composer Gustav von Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde) to Venice where he hopes to recuperate from his recent failures. He soon falls for an impossibly beautiful Polish boy named Tadzio (Björn Andrésen) and risks his life to stay near him while deadly cholera sweeps across the city.
Featuring the music of Austro-Bohemian Romantic composer, Gustav Mahler, the film is beautifully set in fin de siècle Venice.
‘It is a very slow, precise, and beautiful film, proportioned by a master.’ – The Guardian
