Elizabeth Tudor (Cate Blanchett) becomes queen of a divided and dangerous England in 1558. She is roundly perceived as weak by her rivals within the country and abroad, and she is strongly advised to marry by Sir William Cecil (Richard Attenborough).

But Elizabeth will be married only to her country. Intelligent and cautious, she must choose where to place her trust: with her shrewd secretary Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush), a master of espionage, or her secret lover, Robert Dudley (Joseph Fiennes).

After starring in Oscar and Lucinda (1997)this film catapulted Blanchett to international prominence. She gained numerous awards for her superb portrayal of the young monarch, including a BAFTA and Golden Globe, and earned her first Academy Award nomination.

‘A powerful, arty production, with a strong cast performing well’ – Empire Magazine

‘Blanchett conveys [Elizabeth] with grace, poise and intelligence … whether cutting a roomful of Parliament members down to size with her quicksilver wit or dancing a volta that’s sexier than most tangos’ - Variety

Presented on a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
