On a cold Halloween night in 1963, 6-year-old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years at Smith’s Grove Sanatorium, but on 30 October 1978, 21-year-old Michael (Tony Moran) steals a car and escapes. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois where he looks for his next victims.
It's almost impossible to talk about Halloween without going into the enormous impact the slasher had on horror filmmaking. It didn’t just seed its own long-running franchise but inspired decades of films to come – from Friday the 13th (1980) to Scream (1996, 2022) and beyond, its legacy continues.
And it gave the world Jamie Lee Curtis, something we will be forever thankful for.
This Halloween, come celebrate the best day of the year with your old pals Michael, Laurie and Dr Loomis on the big screen, from a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
‘Carpenter's 1978 slasher classic has inspired a million imitations as well as sequels, but few that demonstrate so clearly that a disreputable genre movie can also be a pure, rigorous work of art’ – The Age
Presented on a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
