At the age of seven, Yukinojō, witnesses his parents’ tragic suicide, driven to despair by three corrupt merchant lords. Raised by a kabuki troupe leader and bound by his father’s dying wish, he trains in both performance and swordsmanship. Now a celebrated onnagata (male actor who plays female roles), Yukinojō arrives in Edo to confront his enemies. Set in the Edo era, this melodrama follows Yukinojō from stage to battlefield as he encounters a mischievous thief, an enamoured concubine and prejudiced samurai, turning theatre into a weapon of vengeance.
A stylised jidaigeki (period drama), An Actor’s Revenge features striking kabuki sequences and intense swordplay, including a gripping duel fought while the protagonist remains in female costume. Adapted from Otokichi Mikami’s newspaper serial, this film condenses the original five-hour trilogy, also directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, a former onnagata. In this film Kazuo Hasegawa plays three key roles-Yukinojō, his mother and Yamitarō- reprising his lead nearly 30 years later in director Kon Ichikawa's 1963 remake.
