Malcolm (Colin Friels) is a shy, reclusive and brilliant inventor who loses his job and then takes in 2 tenants, Judith (Lindy Davies) and Frank (John Hargreaves), to help pay the rent.
After Malcolm discovers that his roommates are professional thieves, he helps them plan and execute an elaborate bank heist. Their newfound adventure soon leads to an unlikely and heartwarming friendship.
This oddball comedy from director Nadia Tass was a huge hit with audiences when it was first released. The endearing quirkiness of the protagonist, beautifully encapsulated by Colin Friels, and his inventions is what makes Malcolm a cult classic from the Australian New Wave era.
