1995 | DCP | USA | D: Kathryn Bigelow
Set in the final days of 1999, this dystopian sci-fi thriller follows ex-cop Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes). He has since moved into a more lucrative trade: the illegal sale of virtual reality-like recordings that allow users to connect with the emotions and past experiences of others.
Nero is shocked to see a brutal murder on one of the bootleg recordings. He enlists a friend, bodyguard and limo driver Mace (Angela Bassett), to help find the killer – and the two soon stumble upon a vast conspiracy involving the police force Nero once worked for.
Technically innovative, combined with excellent performances and a strong political tone more in line with Bigelow’s later films, Strange Days is in many ways the key to her work.
‘A literally stunning event. Some directors can, thank God, still make you experience films’ – Empire
‘The head trip of the year’ – The Boston Globe
