1992 | DCP | AUS| D: Baz Luhrmann

Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is a ballroom dancer with innovative steps and a penchant for breaking the rules. His impulsive behaviour on the dance floor causes him to lose his dance partner, Liz Holt (Gia Carides). Fran (Tara Morice), from the beginners’ class and waiting in the wings, offers to be Scott’s new partner and they set off on a journey to prove the judges wrong and to dance their own steps at the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Championships.
A romantic comedy masquerading as a docu-drama, the film has it all - drama, comedy, colour, movement, music, dancing and an astounding visual aesthetic, which becomes the recognisable feature of future Bazmark productions. Strictly Ballroom had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992, where it received a 15-minute standing ovation.
NFSA Restores is an exciting program to digitise, restore and preserve, at the highest archival standards, classic and cult Australian films so they can be seen on the big screen in today’s digital cinemas. The restoration of Strictly Ballroom involved a 4K 16bit scan of the Original Print Negative, from the national collection, completed to international archival standards. The final audio mix was digitised and demuxed. The restoration process included the involvement of the two key creatives – Producer Tristram Miall and Director Baz Luhrmann. Fresh from the Australian premiere at Sydney Film Festival we are excited to bring it to a Canberra audience.
‘This bright, breezy and immensely likable musical comedy, a remarkably confident film debut for co-writer/director Baz Luhrmann, looks set to waltz away with a sizable box office return when it opens Down Under. Internationally, this modestly budgeted charmer should also make its mark, with festival slots definitely indicated.’ – David Stratton, Variety, May 14, 1992
