Arc Cinema
Allocated Seating
110 Mins
1950 | 35mm | USA | D: Billy Wilder
Arguably one of the greatest movies about Hollywood, Billy Wilder's masterpiece Sunset Boulevard is a tremendously entertaining combination of noir, black comedy and character study.
It is an unforgettable portrait of a silent film star, living in exile in her secluded mansion and dreaming of a comeback. Gloria Swanson gives a defining performance for the ages as Norma Desmond, with her grasping talons, theatrical mannerisms and grandiose delusions.
Norma refuses to accept that her stardom has ended (‘I am big. It’s the pictures that got small’). Hiring a struggling screenwriter (William Holden) to revive her career, what starts as a professional relationship soon turns to tragic infatuation.
‘One of the best swipes at Hollywood to come out of Hollywood, a wonderfully absurd comedy, and one of the best noir films ever’ – ABC Radio Australia
‘Performances by the entire cast, and particularly William Holden and Gloria Swanson, are exceptionally fine’ – Variety (1950)
Presented on a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
