One of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century, Stanley Kubrick was born in New York in 1928 and moved to California when he was 12. He taught himself filmmaking and secured his first big break by directing The Killing for United Artists in 1956.

In 1961, he moved to England and collaborated with Peter Sellers on two films, Lolita and Dr. Strangelove, before spending five years developing 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). He next made A Clockwork Orange in 1971, which was nominated for four Academy Awards. He continued his run of success with the historic epic Barry Lyndon in 1975, later making The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut.

A fierce defender of his creative independence, Kubrick was also an innovator, pioneering the use of the Steadicam. Known for his symmetrical visual compositions and obsession with detail, he often explored psychological and existential themes and almost always adapted challenging books for the screen.

He died in 1999, aged 70.
