John Merrick (John Hurt) spends his life on display in a freak show owned by Mr Bytes (Freddie Jones). He is mistreated and beaten until Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), a surgeon at London Hospital offers his help.
As Merrick starts to attract the attention of high society, the morality of the hospital staff’s well-meaning actions comes into question. And Bytes is not content to let Merrick enjoy the relative peace of the hospital – he wants him back for his touring freak show.
‘Mr Hurt is truly remarkable... the physical production is beautiful, especially Freddie Francis's black-and-white photography’ – The New York Times
