1993| 35MM| New Zealand| D: Jane Campion

Set in the mid-19th century, The Piano follows the story of Ada (Holly Hunter), a mute woman sent to New Zealand along with her young daughter and prized piano for an arranged marriage to the wealthy landowner, Stewart (Sam Neil). However, life in the rugged forests of New Zealand's North Island is not all she may have imagined and nor is her relationship with her new husband.

She suffers torment and loss when Stewart sells her piano to the neighbour, George (Harvey Keitel). Ada learns from George that she may earn back her piano by giving him piano lessons, but only with certain other conditions attached. At first Ada despises George but slowly their relationship is transformed, and this propels them into a tragic situation.

Critically acclaimed, the film won Jane Campion the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making her the first - and to date only - woman to win the award. She was also only the second woman nominated for Best Director at the Oscars. A significant and beautiful piece of filmmaking – and a must for the big screen!

Screening from a 35mm print from the NFSA collection.
