ABOUT THE SAPPHIRES
2012 | 35mm | AUS | D: Wayne Blair
Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell are The Sapphires – a group of Australian Aboriginal singers in 1960s Australia. They team up with Irish chancer Dave (Chris O’Dowd) to take the show on the road to Vietnam.
Based on a true story, this likeable film tackles themes of racism, war, social upheaval and civil rights without losing its razzle-dazzle charm.
‘Sunshiny effervescence dominates Wayne Blair's '60s-set parable of self-determination.’ – SBS
Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
