2020 | DCP | Australia, Afghanistan | D: Granaz Moussavi
Spirited 9-year-old Hewad (Arafat Faiz) yearns to become a movie star or a filmmaker. He practises his craft whenever he can, auditioning and directing other kids in his spare moments between peddling pomegranates and amulets to support his family.
Based on a true story, the Kabul-shot When Pomengranates Howl is the poignant and compassionate new feature from the Iranian-Australian writer-director of My Tehran for Sale (2009). Moussavi elicits remarkable performances from her young, non-professional cast while the gorgeous lensing by cinematographer Behrouz Badrouj lends this touching, shattering film an inquisitive vitality.
‘Succeeds with aplomb … [Director] Moussavi … brilliantly draw[s] out multiple fantastic performances from an untrained cast, while also creating an atmosphere that successfully challenges the existing narratives of the Middle East’ – ScreenHub
‘Empathetic and well-intentioned filmmaking … heartfelt’ – Screen Daily

As their sole breadwinner, following the martyrdom of his father and older brother, Hewad takes his adult responsibilities seriously – but when he meets an Australian photojournalist (Andrew Quilty) who gifts him a camera, it may just be the turning point he needs.
