Born in Düsseldorf in 1945, Wim Wenders became a key figure in the New German Cinema movement of the 1970s, which focused on low-budget, auteur-driven films.
Wenders started his own Berlin production company in 1976 called Road Movies and went on to make road movies the great theme of his work – starting with the trilogy of Alice in the Cities (1974), The Wrong Move (1975) and Kings of the Road (1976).
He moved to Hollywood in 1978 to develop his fascination with American themes and refined his style, exploring loneliness and alienation with lingering takes on desolate landscapes, exposing the poetry in the everyday. He came to international attention with Paris, Texas in 1984, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and a Best Director BAFTA.
Three years later, he won best director at Cannes for Der Himmel über Berlin, released as Wings of Desire in English. Wenders also made unconventional documentaries, including Tokyo-Ga, PINA and Buena Vista Social Club.
In 2024, he was honoured with the European Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Film Academy.
