Batman: Tim Burton Double Feature

Batman: Tim Burton Double Feature

When Warner Bros entered the Batman universe and handed the reigns to Tim Burton, they knew they were in for a dark and eclectic take. Fresh from 1988’s Beetlejuice, Burton established a shadowy, gothic Gotham City as one of the film’s key elements.

After the success of Batman, Burton negotiated greater creative control for Batman Returns, delivering an even more Burton-saturated world for The Dark Knight. This double feature presents Burton’s two contributions to the Batman universe, back-to-back.

Batman

6PM | Arc Cinema
1989 | PG | 125 mins | DCP | GBR, USA | D: Tim Burton

By day, billionaire Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) falls for journalist Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger), while by night he battles the Joker (Jack Nicholson) as his superhero alter ego.

The first Warner Bros take on Batman swung dark under Tim Burton’s direction, exploring the brooding protagonist’s psychological struggles and paving the way for a new era in comic-book film adaptations.

Batman Returns

8PM | Arc Cinema
1992 | M | 126 mins | DCP | USA | D: Tim Burton

Christmas in Gotham City is plagued by two dastardly villains: the monstrous and vengeful Penguin (Danny DeVito) and the latex-clad Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). Only Batman (Michael Keaton) can save the city, unless he falls for Catwoman’s alter ego, Selina Kyle, first.

After the success of his 1989 Batman, Warner Bros gave Tim Burton even more creative control, and the sequel is saturated in his fantastical vaudeville aesthetic.
