Two queens. Two highly stylised and deeply unconventional retellings of history.
In Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola playfully reimagines the iconic and ill-fated French queen. Eschewing historical complexity, this film paints a portrait of a frivolous and ignorant young royal at the brink of revolution. A rock concert of period cinema, Marie Antoinette is replete with stunning locations, decadent costuming and a masterful contemporary soundtrack.

‘…gorgeous, giddy, gilded filmmaking – Empire

Meanwhile, black comedy The Favourite reinvents the final years of the last Stuart monarch, in an absurd, queer riot of historical filmmaking. Yorgos Lanthimos takes a provocative script from Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara to dizzying heights, with brilliant performances by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone.

‘…despite the nominally historical setting, this has none of the staid distance of a costume drama. On the contrary, it feels cruelly, deliciously contemporary, shot through with a sense of modernist absurdity – The Guardian

Marie Antoinette presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
