All’s fair in love and war in these two devilish divorce comedies.
In The War of the Roses, director Danny DeVito also stars as divorce attorney Gavin D’Amato, narrating the cautionary tale of Oliver (Michael Douglas) and Barbara Rose (Kathleen Turner). With their perfect, all-American life on the line, these two will spite each other to the bitter end to retain their assets. The question is: by the time they’re done with each other, will any of their treasured possessions be left in one piece?
‘A compellingly watchable, suspenseful, and often funny treatment of a grim subject…that also becomes an indirect commentary on yuppie materialism’ – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
Meanwhile, in Intolerable Cruelty, the legal quagmire of ending a marriage gets especially complicated when soon-to-be divorcee Marilyn (Catherine Zeta-Jones) meets divorce lawyer Miles (George Clooney). Hearts face off against heads in this battle of the wills (and prenups!). Will these two divorce professionals stay on task, or could actual romance get in the way?
‘Tight as a drum, glamorous and exquisitely funny’ – Damon Wise, Empire
