With his physical appearance affected by a rare genetic disorder (now thought to be Proteus Syndrome), John Merrick (John Hurt) is discovered by Dr Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) while being exploited as a freak show novelty. As Treves takes Merrick into his care, Merrick’s true intellect and humanity comes to the fore. Despite Treves friendship though, Merrick’s differences continue to make him a target for exploitation.
Shot in stunning black-and-white, David Lynch’s second directorial feature received eight Oscar nominations, including the first of Lynch’s three Best Director nominations. A college student uncovers the seedy underbelly of small-town North Carolina in David Lynch’s cult classic neo-noir.
The discovery of a severed ear lying in a field near small-town Lumberton, North Carolina, sets of the mystery investigation at the heart of this neo-noir classic. More divisive and less awarded that his earlier The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet nevertheless earned David Lynch another Oscar nomination for Best Director and has gone on to firmly establish its place as a cult classic.
