Nora Ephron + Meg Ryan Rom-Com Christmas
SAT 6 – THU 18 DEC | Arc Cinema
Meg Ryan was not a huge star when she landed the role of Sally in When Harry Met Sally…, written by the already-established writer, filmmaker and journalist, Nora Ephron. But their professional chemistry delighted audiences, and Ryan went on to star in Ephron’s next two rom-coms, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail.
The pair developed a strong friendship and creative collaboration, Ryan embodying Ephron’s sharp, relatable dialogue with quirkiness and charm. Ryan once said of Ephron, ‘I almost feel like I can read her mind’.
This Christmas spotlight presents three genre-defining rom-coms from their iconic Hollywood partnership: Rob Reiner’s 1989 When Harry Met Sally… alongside ‘90s favourites Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, both directed by Ephron.
1989 | M | 93 mins | DCP | USA| D: Rob Reiner
Charting the hate-to-love relationship between cynical Harry (Billy Crystal) and whimsical Sally (Meg Ryan) over decades, this beloved late-’80s rom-com poses the (rather heteronormative) question: can men and women be friends, or does sex always get in the way?
Screenwriter Nora Ephron playfully answers with a genre-redefining script filled with relatable conversations on love, intimacy and friendship.
1993 | PG | 101 mins | DCP | USA | D: Nora Ephron
Grieving single dad Sam (Tom Hanks) is hoodwinked into talking about his feelings on national radio by his eight-year-old son. On the other side of the country, journalist Annie (Meg Ryan) is moved by Sam’s story and decides to track him down – despite her engagement to someone else.
With a deftly handled script that famously keeps the main characters apart for almost the entire movie, Nora Ephron's rom-com classic has remained a favourite for over 30 years.
1998 | PG | 119 mins | DCP | USA | D: Nora Ephron
Set in the not-so-distant past when online dating was new, You’ve Got Mail is based on a much older premise: adversaries unknowingly falling in love. New York indie bookshop owner Kathleen (Meg Ryan) battles Joe (Tom Hanks), the owner of a threatening book chain, by day – while falling for him online by night.
Alongside the delightful nostalgia of dial-up internet, Nora Ephron’s ‘90s classic intriguingly anticipates the seismic impact of the internet on the business of bookselling.
