Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) spends one last night on the town with his buddies before leaving for college, including Steve (Ron Howard) and Laurie (Cindy Williams).

Featuring drag racers, sock hops and a soundtrack of ‘60s hits, American Graffiti is an explicit meditation on nostalgia itself. The characters’ coming-of-age story parallels a broader historical moment, with America poised on the brink of entering the war in Vietnam.

‘A funny-serious movie with gorgeous cars and colours and an amazing feel for the artefacts of an instantly vanished era’ – Empire
