Arc Cinema presents a series of irreverent Friday night filmic feasts, curated and hosted by drag artist and culture warrior Venus Mantrap.
Cult Classics with Venus Mantrap explores the archives to showcase cinema with bite: films that unnerve, push buttons, ask questions and just look good on the big screen! Gather your tribe of misfits and rowdy rebels and join Venus for edgy movies, fan favourites and hidden gems.
While a serial killer is on the loose, FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is sent to pick the brains of incarcerated Dr Hannibal 'The Cannibal' Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) – a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer.
Kicking off our ‘Serial Killer Spring’ season, we revisit this 1991 sleeper hit – that eventually cleaned up at awards season, collecting five Oscars including Best Picture, Actor and Actress – seeing how and why it’s been hailed (alongside Jaws, Halloween and Psycho) as one of the all-time greatest horror films.
“Anthony Hopkins’ performance as Lecter is an uproarious technical masterpiece. All his stage work and accumulated Shakespearian savvy had been leading to this moment. The high-impact close-ups on his face that director Jonathan Demme creates are moments of climactic confrontation, intercut with closeups on Clarice, and they land like crashes of timpani.” – The Guardian
“Miss Foster and Mr Hopkins are so good, in fact, that Clarice and Hannibal sometimes seem more important than the mechanics of The Silence of the Lambs, which is, otherwise, committed to meeting the obligations of a suspense melodrama.” – The New York Times
Includes pre-screening introduction and live performance by Venus Mantrap.
