In the suburb of Brunswick, down-and-out chef Carl (Sam Neill) takes a job at a seedy nightclub and strikes up a relationship with barmaid Sophie (Zoe Carides). Amidst simmering ethnic tensions and the murky waters of Melbourne’s criminal underbelly, Carl accidentally kills a drug-dealing co-worker and turns to his questionable friend Dave (John Clarke) to help him dispose of the body.
Based on Boyd Oxlade’s 1980s comic novel, this Australian black comedy is perhaps best known for its grisly grave-digging mishap and award-winning score.
‘…a gem of a black comedy and certainly the best that Australia has produced in years.’ – The Sydney Morning Herald
An $8 Collection Selection screening: explore hidden gems and Australian classics from the NFSA collection.
Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
