1927 |35mm| GER | D: Fritz Lang

The son of Metropolis master planner, Freder Frederson discovers his father’s utopian world is, in fact, built on the backs of a class of underground workers. Freder unites with working- class leader Maria to oppose the stark class divides and unite the city.

Fritz Lang’s silent science- fiction masterpiece is stunningly realised in Art Deco and Bauhaus detail. The 2010 restoration brings together rare footage, previously considered lost, and the original orchestral score from the film’s premiere.

‘Few films have ever been more visually exhilarating’ – Roger Ebert

Presented by the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) in collaboration with Canberra Art Biennial and Canberra Glassworks alongside the exhibition of Of line, of light by artist Bronte Cormican-Jones on the NFSA lawns.

Cormican-Jones and the NFSA’s Aidan Delaney (Creative Producer and Program Coordinator) will give a brief introduction to the film and its connections to the artwork. A short film about the development of the artwork will play in Mediatheque from 6.30pm.

Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
