Historian Dr Breda Carty will introduce the Deaf History Collections project, an online archive of historical Australian Deaf community records. She will focus on the value of film and video records in bringing Deaf people’s history to life, and the important collaboration developed with the NFSA collections team. 

Dr Breda Carty is a deaf historian who has previously worked as a teacher of deaf students and lecturer in deaf education. She is currently an Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University in Sydney where she is working on the Deaf History Collections project. She was the C. H. Currey Fellow at the State Library of New South Wales in 2017 and for many years served as Secretary and News Editor of Deaf History International. Her book - Managing Their Own Affairs: The Australian Deaf Community During the 1920s and 1930s - was published by Gallaudet University Press in 2018.  

Jillian Mackenzie is a curator and film projectionist with over 20 years’ experience working at the NFSA. Her work focuses on ensuring the national collection reflects the diversity of people’s experiences, and that these stories are preserved and shared with all communities. Jillian has curated numerous film screenings and exhibitions, including The Marvellous Corricks. She works across curation, research, collection interpretation and archival projection. She leads restoration initiatives that safeguard historically significant works, with a particular focus on the early decades of cinema. 

Sign On Screen Festival runs from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May. All events are free. Registration is essential for individual sessions or for a Saturday and/or Sunday day pass.

Arc Cinema is equipped with hearing loop capability.  
All workshop and panel events will be Auslan<>English interpreted and all screenings will feature English SDH captions.

Sign On Screen is a collaboration between the Australian National University, Deaf Connect, the Australian Research Council and the NFSA.
