Join Luke King and Irene Holub, two film buffs with a deep appreciation for Deaf cinema as they launch their new movie show The D Spot to a live cinema audience at the Sign on Screen Festival. This session/show will be recorded so be prepared to laugh and interact with The D Spot Show Hosts in the usual studio audience way!
Luke and Irene will be discussing what makes a Deaf film work. They will take a close look at the films shown throughout the festival reviewing them from a Deaf perspective in the style of a Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton At the Movies show!
With more Deaf-led stories emerging on screen this session explores what resonates well with Deaf and HoH audiences from storytelling and visual language to authenticity and representation — arriving at what they conclude really hits the D spot!
Come along for an honest, engaging conversation about Deaf films and why they matter.

Luke King is a Deaf artist, Auslan lecturer, and cultural consultant based on Wurundjeri Country (Naarm/Melbourne). His practice spans drawing, performance, and collaborative work, often exploring Deaf experience, visual language, and embodied storytelling. Luke has exhibited nationally and has been involved in major arts programs including Next Wave and various gallery-based projects. Alongside his creative practice, he delivers Auslan teaching, Deaf awareness training, and accessibility consultancy across the arts and health sectors. He is passionate about expanding access and representation for Deaf artists and audiences, and creating spaces where visual language and culture can thrive.
Irene Holub is a Deaf CALD artist, filmmaker, advocate and director whose work explores human connection through the lens of Deaf culture. Her creative practice is grounded in lived experience, expressed through projection, theatre, and multimedia forms. Driven by a curiosity for communication, she uses poetry to articulate unseen languages and complex emotional landscapes.
