Three student filmmakers venture into Seneca Creek State Park in Maryland USA to document the legend of The Blair Witch. Students Heather, Michael and Joshua vanish, leaving behind only their footage. As fear escalates, absence becomes the film’s greatest weapon, using suggestion rather than spectacle to create terror.
The Blair Witch Project premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999. The low budget pseudo-documentary had clever publicity including listing its actors as either missing or deceased. It was a surprise hit and highlighted the power of using uncertainty and asking viewers to complete the story themselves. The film launched a media franchise including two sequels, novels, comic books and video games.
‘A masterclass in how little you need to show to scare people senseless.’ - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
