With his physical appearance affected by a rare genetic disorder (now thought to be Proteus Syndrome), John Merrick (John Hurt) is discovered by Dr Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) while being exploited as a freak show novelty. As Treves takes Merrick into his care, Merrick’s true intellect and humanity comes to the fore. Despite Treves friendship though, Merrick’s differences continue to make him a target for exploitation.

Shot in stunning black-and-white, David Lynch’s second directorial feature received eight Oscar nominations, including the first of Lynch’s three Best Director nominations. The film also won the César Award for Best Foreign Film and BAFTAs for Best Film, Best Actor (Hurt) and Best Production Design.

There is dedicated visitor parking on the premises between McCoy Circuit and Ellery Cresent (paid parking, up to three hours). There is also limited free parking surrounding the building on Liversidge Street.
We recommend using public transport in peak times.
