A natural born actor, his arrival on screen immediately began to unpick stereotypes and misrepresentations of First Nations peoples. Gulpilil grew up on Country in Marwuyu in northeast Arnhem Land and landed his first starring role when he was just 16 years old after British filmmaker, Nicholas Roeg, spotted his skill in ceremonial dance and cast him in Walkabout, released in 1971.

Gulpilil gradually became one of Australian film industry’s biggest names, leading a glamorous life on the world celebrity stage, hanging out with John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Marlon Brando, Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee.

Gulpilil enriched the film industry’s engagement with First Nations perspectives. He starred in the beloved Australian story Storm Boy (1976, Henri Safran), recontextualised chapters of colonial history in The Tracker (2002, Rolf de Heer) and Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002, Phillip Noyce), and examined the role of the Elder in Satellite Boy (2012, Catriona McKenzie).  Collaborating with filmmakers, Gulpilil drew inspiration from his own life and from Yolngu stories and language, inspiring the making of Ten Canoes with Rolf de Heer (2006), co-writing Charlie’s Country (2013, Rolf de Heer) and co-producing his farewell film, My Name is Gulpilil (2021, Molly Reynolds). A deeply respected Yolngu Elder in his community and a globally celebrated actor, Gulpilil passed away in 2021.
